The storyline of the movie revolved around mothers and surrogacy. The script of the movie Jasmine was written by writers Siddharth and Garima. Aishwarya found the storyline and the concept as challenging and something she would be interested in. She was really excited about the project until February of 2018 when she hinted that she is still not sure about doing the movie. She said “Our talks had stopped around February this year, but now, I will take the discussion further. Right now, I don’t know whether I’m doing it or not. I liked the concept but asked them to make a few changes to the script”.
Fast forwarding 8 months from that date, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has now confirmed that she has turned down the “Jasmine” movie project. According to DNA sources “Aishwarya has turned down Jasmine. There were several loopholes in the script. Although Siddharth and Garima’s basic idea was strong, there were many problems with the story, which the actress had reportedly pointed out to the writer duo. After the corrections, they approached her with a fresh script, but Ash still felt she couldn’t relate to it. So, she politely informed the team that she won’t be able to do the film anymore.”
Writers Siddharth and Garima have taken a back step post this and it looks like they have indefinitely postponed the project. Shree Narayan Singh, the filmmaker, had shown great interest in the Jasmine project in the past. He backed the movie from the beginning, however, he recently mentioned that he won’t be producing the film anymore. In his words “The film should have gone on floors by now. But Siddharth and Garima, too, had other commitments to complete. So, I will not be able to tell you when it will start. It’s currently on hold”.
Prernaa Arora, who was also producing the movie has not said anything so far. She last worked with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in the movie “Fanney Khan”.
To be honest, surrogate mother seemed to be a very challenging project and we were somehow excited to see Aishwarya Rai Bachchan taking up the challenge as she is one of the only few Bollywood stars who could have done justice to such a demanding role. But we believe that Aishwarya Rai did the right thing by turning down the project. Surrogacy can be a controversial topic, if not portrayed well. And if she didn’t feel that the script was strong and good enough, she would have done the project. We are happy that Aishwarya has taken the path to do good quality films with challenging characters and storyline. One can easily do each and every film that comes down their way, but that does not make them a quality actor.
What do you think? Did Aishwarya Rai Bachchan do the right thing by turning down a project like “Jasmine”?
